The Pediatric Airway Clinic

The Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) at Hackensack University Medical Center has established a multidisciplinary pediatric airway clinic to manage children with complex airway problems. Under the direction of Daniel Samadi, M.D., chief of The Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology, the clinic is the only one of its kind in northeastern New Jersey.

Children, especially those born prematurely, may have problems that affect their breathing. Some may have problems with blockages of the larynx (airway), trachea (windpipe), or throat, while others have difficulty swallowing.

Otolaryngologists at the pediatric airway clinic treat a wide range of airway disorders, including subglottic stenosis and congenital airway disorders.

They specialize in the care of children with long-term tracheotomies.

The pediatric airway clinic’s hallmark is a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach. Along with a staff of highly skilled and experienced surgeons and airway nurse practitioners, the team includes experts in speech, swallowing and respiratory therapy. Members of the clinic work together to provide patients with the highest level of care. If needed, the team also consults with children's specialists in the fields of pulmonology, gastroenterology, and critical care.

If surgery is recommended, the pediatric airway clinic’s otolaryngologists are trained in the latest, leading-edge surgical techniques. They are among a select group nationwide that performs state-of-the-art airway reconstruction including largyngotracheoplasty (enlargement of the airway using rib cartilage) and cricotracheal resection (removal of the scarred portion of the airway). The surgeons also perform other airway procedures such as laser surgery, tracheotomy, tonsillectomy, and adenoidectomy.
